UN-Habitat Assembly Preparations; Meeting With H.E The First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto.





The UN-Habitat Executive Director Ms. Maimunah Mohd Shariff, the Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Zacharia Mwangi Njeru, together with the Permanent Representative of Kenya to UN-Habitat Amb. Jean Kimani paid a courtesy call on the First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto at State House, Nairobi. The meeting was in line with the ongoing preparations towards the UN-Habitat Assembly which will take place in June 2023 at the UN-Habitat headquarters in Gigiri.


Key issues discussed included the Round-Table for visiting First Ladies, that will be hosted by the First Lady, at the sidelines of the Assembly and the possible areas of conversation in this regard. The Executive Director updated the H.E the First Lady on the preparations so far after which they agreed on the entry points based on the programmes being undertaken by her office.


The Cabinet Secretary briefed of measures already being undertaken by the Ministry, including the incorporation of Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) infrastructures in the development of urban roads. Also Present was Mr. Oumar Sylla, the Director, UN-Habitat Regional Office for Africa.


The second session of the UN-Habitat Assembly set for 5th-9th June under the theme “A sustainable urban future through inclusive and effective multilateralism: Achieving the SDGs in times of global crises” is expected to attract participation of over 6,000 delegates from across the UN-Member States and stakeholders in the field of Sustainable Urbanization and Human Settlements.
